Multicultural Studies in Education M.S.

Educate Students from Culturally Diverse Backgrounds

Multicultural studies is an emerging area of study with a wide variety of career opportunities in education and beyond. Teachers with specialized skills for teaching in culturally and linguistically diverse settings make a difference in the lives of children. Your certification in English as a Second Language (ESL) from University of Houston-Clear Lake's College of Education will support your work with non- English-speakers to improve their reading, comprehension and speaking of the English language. Bilingual education teachers, who teach content in two languages, help strengthen students' native languages while building English proficiency and mastery of grade-level academic content.

The Multicultural Studies focus prepares teachers to address equity and diversity issues within the classroom, school and the community while the Social Justice in Education focus offers a slightly broader focus, preparing educators and other professionals to explore, identify and advocate for human rights in a variety of environments, organizations and communities.

Become a Multicultural Education Professional

At the graduate level, UHCL offers a Master of Science in Multicultural Studies in Education, with the choice of 4 different specializations:

  1. Bilingual Education;
  2. English as a Second Language;
  3. Multicultural Studies; and
  4. Social Justice in Education (our new and completely online option).

In addition, students have the option of additional supplemental certificates in either Bilingual Education or English as a Second Language. A supplemental certificate gives educators the ability to teach the chosen supplemental subject (Bilingual education or ESL) at the grade level and in the area of their already existing teaching certificate. This interdisciplinary Master of Science program will enhance educators’ understanding of issues that affect public school students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The program is designed so that students will be prepared comprehensively at an advanced level to deal effectively with the many multicultural issues and concerns that abound in schools today.

Graduates with a Master of Science in Multicultural Studies in Education from UHCL’s College of Education can pursue careers in public schools, community colleges and non-school settings. Depending upon specialized coursework, graduates' career options may include bilingual or ESL teacher, school district multicultural education/diversity coordinator, ESL teacher for the community college and non-school settings, adult literacy or continuing education teacher and much more.
