Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification Plan Core Subjects EC-6 ESL Supplemental

Respond Effectively to the Needs of Non-Native English Speaking Students

Significantly improve the lives of students struggling to learn English by obtaining a Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification in Core Subjects EC-6 with ESL Supplement from University of Houston-Clear Lake. Often, ESL students are too intimidated to participate fully in the classroom, and the insightful communication and management skills you have acquired from your previous profession could make the difference for a child struggling to learn English. The skills and life experience you bring to your classroom, combined with the instruction you'll receive from dedicated faculty will ensure that all non-native students you teach will become fully proficient in English.

Help All Students Become Full Participants in School

In UHCL's College of Education, your coursework will equip you to teach all core subjects in an elementary or middle school classroom who can address the gap that currently exists for ESL students. More than 10 percent of public school students are identified as English Language Learners, and of those, 71 percent are native Spanish speakers. Your coursework will prepare you for certification and to become an effective, creative classroom teacher with the ability to inspire culturally diverse students to acquire the language skills they need to make progress in all aspects of their education and their life.

Although it is not necessary for students holding at least a bachelor's degree and seeking initial teacher certification to pursue a second bachelor's degree, those who wish to do so must meet the university's lower-level requirements in addition to the requirements for both teacher certification and the second degree, unless such requirements were met through the completion of the first bachelor's degree. These lower-level requirements are described in the Core section of the catalog.
